The University of Michigan School of Nursing announces four two-year postdoctoral research fellowship positions that are funded by a National Cancer Institute T32 training program (T32-CA-236621).
Fellows will be responsible for furthering their training in one aspect of cancer care delivery research – descriptive discovery, intervention development and testing, and implementation science – through formal coursework, informal seminars, applied experiences with research teams, and through mentored research. Fellows are expected to prepare first-authored, data-based publications in peer review journals, submit at least one extramural research grant, and develop expertise in the conduct of cancer care delivery research. Populations of interest include adults and pediatric patients and their caregivers. Settings may include prevention, diagnosis and treatment, survivorship, and end-of-life.
All scholars should demonstrate interest or capability to conduct research in one of the three areas listed below within the cancer care continuum:
1) descriptive discovery to identify patterns and consequences of cancer care delivery
2) developing and testing interventions to improve both patient-centered and system-level outcomes in the cancer context
3) implementation science methods to assure efficacious interventions are delivered in cancer care delivery settings.
Fellows will receive mentoring from interdisciplinary faculty across the University with funded research programs focused on cancer care delivery science. In addition to seminars and coursework, professional development activities will be planned in grantsmanship, preparing scientific papers, disseminating research findings to broad audiences, rigor and reproducibility of research, team science, and the responsible conduct of research.
One fellow is expected to work with the Data Science for Dynamic Intervention Decision-making (d3) Laboratory at the Institute for Social Research. One postdoctoral fellow will work on the development, advancement, and dissemination of statistical and machine learning approaches for building highly efficacious Adaptive Interventions, as applied to cancer control. These approaches include the Sequential Multiple Assignment Randomized Trial (SMART) design, Micro-Randomized Trials (MRTs) and related data analytic methods. The selected candidate will collaborate on research with an interdisciplinary team. Duties include conducting data analyses, including data arising from SMARTs or MRTs; as well as leading and participating in preparing conference presentations and scientific articles for publication.
Required Qualifications: Qualified individuals for this position will either have a Ph.D. in the behavioral or health sciences with strong computation, data management, statistical and machine learning methodological skills and interests; or a Ph.D. in statistics or biostatistics with a demonstrated interest in the behavioral or health sciences, particularly intervention science as applied to cancer control.
Four positions are anticipated to be filled during the 2021-2022 academic year, preferably by July 1, 2022. Applicants will be considered, depending on experience and research productivity. - PhD from accredited programs in Engineering, Medicine, Nursing, Pharmacy, Public Health, Social Work, and/or related fields pertinent to study cancer care delivery. Physician scientists who have completed formal research training and wish to focus their careers on cancer care delivery research will be considered.

- Interviews with the UM-selected Primary Mentor and Program Committee
